Finasteride (Proscar or Propecia) is a medication used in dogs to restore infertility issues caused by benign prostatic hypertrophy (an enlargement of the prostate gland caused by hormones) and treat the general clinical signs associated with it.
Finasteride is a hormone antagonist which stops testosterone from being converted to dihydrotestosterone, the hormone that stimulates prostate growth. Finasteride can be used to help with signs related to benign prostatic hypertrophy such as increased urge to urinate, straining to defecate, and blood in the urine.
Finasteride blocks production of the body's male hormone, which causes prostate enlargement.
Finasteride for dogs is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlarged prostate) in dogs.

In adult men, Proscar is used to decrease an enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to alleviate BPH symptoms and possibly avoid surgery. Proscar (Finasteride) may help with BPH symptoms by reducing the need to urinate, improving urine flow with less straining, reducing the sense that the bladder isn't empty, and reducing overnight urination.
This medication works by lowering the quantity of DHT, a natural body hormone that drives prostate growth. Proscar isn't approved for prostate cancer prevention. It may raise the risk of acquiring a very dangerous form of prostate cancer by a small amount.
Keep a list of everything you use (including prescription and non-prescription pharmaceuticals, as well as herbal products) and discuss it with your doctor and pharmacist. Without your doctor's permission, do not begin, stop, or modify the dosage of any medications. The findings of a blood test used to identify prostate cancer may be influenced by this medicine (prostatic-specific antigen or PSA levels).
Proscar is available in the following dosage forms:arinase aureate exchange receptor activator (SRCC) forms: human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) human menopausal (premenopausal) and progesterone receptor antagonist human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG) human menopausal (premenopausal) and estrogenic (oral contraceptive). This medication is not approved for use in the treatment of BPH. It may reduce the size of the painful, prolonged erection that occurs during sexual activity. Use with caution in patients with a recent history of sexual activity. Do not use with sexual activity after the close of a allergic reaction. If you notice any symptoms of a separate form of diabetes, discuss them with your doctor.
In order to treat an enlarged prostate (also called a benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)) which is known as a prostatic hypertrophy (PH), a treatment which includes medications like Proscar or an alpha-blocker such as Propranolol must be stopped.
Proscar is prescribed to treat the symptoms of BPH and is to stop the symptoms of a male pattern of an enlarged prostate from recurring. This is called “post-prostatic” prostate enlargement (PPE).
Proscar is taken orally once daily.
There are 2 PDE5 inhibitors that treat BPH. It is not uncommon for men to have PDE5 inhibitors being prescribed to treat BPH.
The primary goal of PDE5 inhibitor treatment of BPH is to reduce the size of the prostate and prostate tissue. It works by blocking an enzyme called phosphodiesterase 5 which breaks down a substance called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).
cGMP is responsible for relaxing blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the prostate.
This increase in blood flow will help to relieve symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
The primary use of PDE5 inhibitors is to treat prostate cancer. PDE5 inhibitors work by decreasing the amount of cGMP produced by the prostate.
In a small sample of men, there was no evidence of an increased risk of prostate cancer. This is known as “low risk” and may be an indication of an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.
In general, PDE5 inhibitors are safe when taken in the right dosage and for the correct treatment of the symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
If you have been diagnosed with a BPH that lasts longer than 4 months and you are taking Proscar for BPH, your doctor will probably tell you to stop taking this medication and tell your doctor. This will only help to relieve symptoms of BPH and will not cause prostate cancer.
In order to get PDE5 inhibitors off the market, a very small sample of men with BPH who had not had symptoms of prostate cancer in the past may be prescribed a PDE5 inhibitor for this purpose.
If you have been diagnosed with BPH that has been treated with a PDE5 inhibitor and are now on Proscar, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible to tell you if this is the case. You may need to stop taking this medication and tell your doctor right away.
Proscar is available in tablets of 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg. It is available in both branded and generic versions. If you need treatment for BPH, ask your doctor how you can treat the symptoms of this condition.
